The End is Near...Or is It?

Human beings seem to be fascinated with the idea of the wold ending. What does that even mean, anyway? The end of the world. Is the "world" like a movie, ending when the screen goes black and the credits begin to roll?

I assume people are referring to the end of civilization as we know it, the near-total if not total extinction of the human species. This could be accomplished by the complete obliteration of this planet (assuming it occurs before we spread to other worlds), but does not necessarily require it.

Anyway, we've almost always had the idea that the end is near, but the exact means by which the end takes place has taken different forms at different times.
